I'm the modern day house wife. I have no children and no husband, but I do have a really fat cat (not her fault or mine) a wonderful, supportive PNC (partner n crime), lots of fabric, a sewing machine, paints and a computer to keep me really busy. I love to create, garden, lay in the sun (for hours), and I make lattes every morning. In the future, I'd love to have some kiddos to play with my fat cat, I'd love to live in the sunshine and I'd love to make a great living off of being creative. Not too much to ask right?! Time to prep your soil.

Our Garden 2009

We didn't have a garden last summer because we were moving. I hope this year we'll have one again. I miss gardening dearly.

Below are three simple steps we took to prepare our soil. If your ground isn't frozen, now would be a good time to prep your soil.

1. Take a soil test to test the PH and nutrient content of your soil. We would buy testers at our feed store. I know places like your hardware store should sell them as well.

2. Till your soil. We have it easy with our rototiller:) You want to till the soil to a depth of 12-14 inches. While you are doing this, incorporate your compost, manure and anything your soil test recommended you add to your soil.

3. If you do not have decent soil, try raised beds.

Now your soil is ready for planting!

Planting a garden, are you with me?

My favorite time of year is quickly approaching. That is gardening season. Is it weird that I love to weed? I'm hoping you guys will join me and share your own gardens on this site. My hope is that you will send me photos of your gardens so I can share them here. What do you think? Are you with me? Along with the photos I'd love to hear about your tips and what you've had the most success with.

Over the weekend we found the time to begin planting our seeds. Our first batch is sort of an experiment because we didn't want to run into town to pick up brand new potting soil, we used some old stuff...hope the seeds will LOVE it! We also used any old containers we kept from last year. After spending too much money on starts in the past, last year we bought a COLD FRAME for only $50.00 on craigslist and we got tons of starts out of it. It acts like a mini green house. This is how easy it's been so far to plant these seeds.

I thought to kick this season off we needed some inspiration, so I painted the new blog header last week in hopes that it would get us moving. In no time we'll be able to enjoy our delicious veggies. I'd love to hear if you are starting a garden this year.
